Sevu Reece looks for history in Suva

Alex Colenso

The Crusaders travel to Suva looking to bounce back after their loss last week. An extra special match for Sevu Reece, as he looks to become the all-time leading try scorer.

The Crusaders hope to climb the hurdle they haven't managed for the past two seasons, beating the Drua in Fiji.

Coach Rob Penney has named his side, with multiple changes from last week's upset loss against Moana Pasifika.

The major change comes at centre, where Fijian-born Sevu Reece will start his first ever game in the 13 jersey, something he says he is really excited for.

“A goal of mine was to play centre at this level, test myself against the best of the best.

"To get this opportunity this week, I’m just so, so excited.”

It was always going to be a special week for Reece, as it's the only time he gets to play in front of his family, who reside in Fiji. He is also one try off becoming the all-time Super Rugby leading try scorer, something he says he would love to do in front of his mum and dad.

“It would be very special to them to see their son make history.

"If I break this record it’ll be history for them, and them knowing that all the sacrifice they’ve done for their son has paid off.”

Reece’s move to centre opens up a spot for try scoring machine Macca Springer, who has his recent run of form rewarded with another opportunity to start on the left wing. Chay Fihaki holds down the right for yet another week.

Unfortunately for the Crusaders, Penney is being forced into resting some of the team's All Blacks after playing most of them for the majority of the first half of the season. Scott Barrett takes a seat in the stands and young gun Tahlor Cahill fills in for him.

Both Cullen Grace and Ethan Blackadder have been forced into rest, as Tom Christie and in form Corey Kellow fill in.

It was a brave call from Penney leaving his mandatory rest for some players till the back half of the season. Even with the Drua having a tough season, they are almost unstoppable when they play at home, shown by a dominant performance over the Chiefs in round four.

The heat could also prove a problem for the Crusaders. It’s expected to be 29 degrees at kick-off, something that will definitely favour the home side as they look to claim their second win of the season.

Kickoff is tomorrow at 4:35pm NZT.
