Kia ora!
Ko Poppy Gibson tōku ingoa.
I’m a journalism student at NZBS, a lifelong lover of sport, and someone who’s always had a lot to say, not just for the sake of talking, but because I genuinely love hearing, sharing, and finding meaning in people’s stories.
I was born in the UK, am the eldest of triplets, and spent most of my childhood bouncing between countries from England to Australia and now back in Aotearoa. That kind of upbringing teaches you things quickly. For me, it taught me how to adapt, get good at goodbyes, and how to throw myself into new spaces with open arms.
Throughout the craziness, Sport became the anchor through all the changes. No matter where we were, it gave me a place to belong. Whether it was kicking a footy, jumping into a new team, or trying a new sport I’d never played before.
Since returning to Aotearoa, I’ve kept playing AFL and embraced everything from local tournaments to reporting from the sidelines. But sport, for me, has never just been about competition, it’s about connection.
Still, I’ve always known I’m capable of more than just sports chat. My experiences have made me curious about people from all walks of life.
At NZBS, I’ve reported on current affairs, culture, politics, and the quiet, meaningful stories. I want to grow into a journalist who brings integrity and warmth, who doesn’t shy away from tough questions or when things get hard.
Reconnecting with my whakapapa here in Aotearoa has been a journey of its own. I've started from the bottom, re-learning te reo Māori to build a stronger sense of identity, and understanding where I come from with both humility and pride.
I’m so grateful for the path that’s led me here, and I’m excited to keep carving my place in this industry, wherever it takes me. Whether it’s a sports match gone to golden point, a political debate, or a quiet conversation with someone whose story deserves to be heard, I’m here for it.
